La pesca deportiva ha cobrado gran relevancia en Guatemala en los últimos años, representando un aporte significativo a la economía de comunidades como Buena Vista, Iztapa y Puerto San José. Esta actividad no solo genera empleo directo e indirecto para los habitantes locales, sino que también constituye una fuente importante de divisas al atraer turistas nacionales e internacionales, fortaleciendo así la economía local y nacional. Sin embargo, el país carece de una reglamentación adecuada que garantice la sostenibilidad del recurso pesquero, lo que plantea desafíos importantes. Estudios científicos han señalado que la pesca deportiva podría estar ocasionando mayores impactos incluso que las pesquerías comerciales. Ante la falta de información actualizada y regulaciones específicas, se consideró necesario estimar la huella ecológica (HE) de la pesca deportiva en las comunidades mencionadas como un indicador de sostenibilidad. Los resultados indican que la pesca deportiva tiene una huella ecológica de 5,128.85 gha, una biocapacidad de 95,804.46 gha, y un balance positivo de 90,675.61 gha. Esto indica que el impacto de la pesca deportiva es bajo, ya que una huella ecológica menor a la biocapacidad asegura un uso sostenible de los recursos y la preservación del ecosistema marino a largo plazo. Estos resultados constituyen una primer línea base sobre la huella ecológica de la pesca deportiva en el país. Por ello, se espera que las entidades relacionadas con esta actividad utilicen esta información para diseñar medidas de ordenamiento que aseguren la sostenibilidad del recurso pesquero, manteniendo la pesca deportiva como motor económico y turístico sin afectar los ecosistemas marinos. |

Sport fishing has gained great relevance in Guatemala in recent years, representing a significant contribution to the economy of communities such as Buena Vista, Iztapa, and Puerto San José. This activity not only generates direct and indirect employment for local residents but also serves as an important source of foreign exchange by attracting na-tional and international tourists, thus strengthening the local and national economy. However, the country lacks adequate regulations to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources, which poses significant challenges. Scientific studies have suggested that sport fishing could potentially have greater impacts than commercial fisheries. In light of the lack of updated information and specific regulations, it was deemed necessary to estimate the ecological footprint (EF) of sport fishing in the mentioned communities as an indicator of sustainability. The results indicate that sport fis-hing has an ecological footprint of 5,128.85 gha, a biocapacity of 95,804.46 gha, and a positive balance of 90,675.61 gha. This demonstrates that the impact of sport fishing is low, as an ecological footprint smaller than the biocapacity ensu-res the sustainable use of resources and the long-term preservation of the marine ecosystem. These findings repre-sent a preliminary baseline for the ecological footprint of sport fishing in the country. Therefore, it is expected that entities related to this activity will use this information to design management measures that guarantee the sustaina-bility of fishery resources while maintaining sport fishing as an economic and tourism driver without compromising marine ecosystems. |
